Also Vienna ÖVP for belt redesign

After the Greens recently presented their ideas for the Vienna Belt, another opposition party, the ÖVP, dedicated itself to the notorious transport axis on Monday. A participation process on the future of the area, which is frequented by up to 80,000 cars per day, was announced. Party leader Karl Mahrer and transport spokeswoman Elisabeth Olischar announced that they wanted to involve both the population and experts here.

The ÖVP would like to devote itself to the “Living Space Belt” section by section. The ring road that runs around the inner districts is currently viewed as a less than livable living environment, but rather as a traffic hell. In recent years, measures such as a small outdoor swimming pool on an intersection plateau have only provided selective and short-term relief.

“We would like to know from the population what the belt stands for, what they think is missing and what they would like for the future,” Olischar explained the concept in a broadcast. The ÖVP has its own suggestions ready – one of which seems quite spectacular: part of the connection might be paved over, which would require the roadways to be lowered.

Specifically, consideration is being given to tunneling the route from Eichenstrasse to Schönbrunner Strasse. It was said that a kind of “central park” might be created there on an area of 60,000 square meters. It should have continuous green spaces, water areas, cultural venues, playgrounds and sports fields and restaurants. In any case, there should be no “bans on thinking,” said party chairman Mahrer, justifying the initiative.

However, the ÖVP is not thinking of reducing the number of lanes: through traffic should be maintained on three lanes, as should the crossings. It is assured that tram lines 6 and 18 will continue to run unhindered. Cycle paths might be maintained and expanded, suggests the People’s Party.
