After the devastating fires on the island of Maui in the US state of Hawaii, the number of dead has risen to 80, according to authorities. The Maui County Government said on Friday evening that the fire department is still working to bring fires under control in various regions of the island. A source of fire near a state-owned gas station in Kaanapali was 100 percent contained in the evening. Hundreds of vehicles would have queued there for fuel.
No fuel will be given out there on Saturday, the message said. Evacuations had been ordered because of the forest fire in the beach area in the west of the island, which is popular with tourists.
Several fires broke out on Maui and the neighboring island of Hawaii on Tuesday, which had spread quickly due to strong winds with speeds of up to 130 km/h. The winds gradually died down, and on Friday the residents of the particularly affected small town of Lahaina in western Maui were able to return to their homes to inspect the damage.
Firefighting and clean-up work continued. According to the US broadcaster CNN, around 1,700 buildings on Maui have been destroyed. With an area of around 1,900 square kilometers, the Hawaiian island is regarding half the size of the Spanish island of Mallorca.
