Alpinestars RT-7 Drystar boots review – light, waterproof and comfortable

In conclusion

The RT-7 have become my all-purpose boots, for short tours, urban trips or “cool” vacations. They replaced my SMX-6 Drystar, which were stiffer, higher and whose sole behaved less well when walking.

They are comfortable, and you can walk around for a few hours in them without suffering any discomfort.

I particularly like the fact that they are very easy to put on, with a very practical zipper and a Velcro tab that stays in place. Apart from the hint of red on the side, they are discreet and go well under standard jeans. On the other hand, with jeans that are tight at the ankles, you will have to give up hiding your shoes underneath.

In the middle of summer, your feet will certainly be warmer than with non-waterproof shoes, but it’s a small sacrifice to make in order to be able to ride in all weathers, without being cold or having your feet wet in the event of rain. Sold for 309.90 CHF in Switzerland, their price is quite high, but if the long-term quality is there, like the other boots of the brand that I have already owned, the investment is worth it.

Their strength can also be interpreted as their weakness; RT-7s are intended for daily or tourist use. The minimal protections and their low rigidity would not inspire me with confidence on the track or when venturing off-road. The sole is also too soft for standing riding. For my trips off the beaten track, I always use the Alpinestars Toucan GTX and have done so since 2016. Even if they are seriously starting to show their age, they still do the job perfectly.
