Alpine has regained momentum in this second part of the season, returning to points more regularly, but “it’s still too little” in the eyes of Bruno Famin, interim director of the team and boss of the entire sporting branch of the brand since the summer.
“We’re still not where we want be”, points out the French leader. “Last year we were fourth in the championship, and today we are sixth, with no prospect of improving this position by the end of the year. We really need to improve.”
The Enstone team is indeed not more threatened for its position, but ahead, Aston Martin is clearly out of reach. So we have to prepare for the future, and the new boss is looking at two distinct aspects: on the track side, he clearly sees the best, but we now need to have a more efficient single-seater, which will be the essential mission for the winter.
“Where I’m happy is that I think we’ve made progress in extracting performance from the car, trying to get the best out of it. race”, confirms Bruno Famin. “Pierre [Gasly] is on a good run of results. Unfortunately, Esteban [Ocon] experienced a few racing incidents, once more in Austin, where he had a very good start. But I’m happy with the team’s progress on the track. We still have a lot to do to really improve our level. That’s why we’re working hard to improve things in the factories and get the most out of our future car.”
Gasly and Ocon give satisfaction
Bruno Famin took stock in the Mexico paddock.
Pierre Gasly has scored points in five of the last seven Grands Prix and Bruno Famin sees this as a sign of an adaptation which has materialized in recent weeks.
“It’s his first season in the team, his first outside the Red Bull environment”he recalls. “He had to learn a lot of things regarding how the team works. And it took time to be in the right context, to have the right feelings, the right way of working with the team. And the “The team has also improved the way of working with Pierre, and we found a good or better configuration in the second half of the season. This is why we are progressing and why Pierre is obtaining better results.”
At the same time, Esteban Ocon lives “a difficult time” on an accounting level, but the confidence of his team is absolutely not damaged.
“There is no doubt regarding his level of performance”assure Bruno Famin. “In Austin he got off to a very good start. He was on the verge of a good performance, perhaps ahead of Pierre depending on the strategy that would have been adopted. It was very good and I have no doubt as to the fact that Esteban will also achieve good results by the end of the season.”
