First super-G of the season and already Marco Odermatt’s first victory! The Nidwalden won at Lake Louise ahead of his Norwegian rival Aleksander Kilde and the Austrian Matthias Mayer. The race was marked by the terrible fall of Mauro Caviezel, who was evacuated, conscious, by helicopter.
Three races, 2 victories and a 3rd place 0″10 from victory, Marco Odermatt is skiing on cloud nine at the start of the season. Nothing surprising when you know the talent of the Mozart of Hergiswil. Untouchable as a giant, the Olympic champion can also be intractable in this discipline which makes the instinctive happy.
This 5th success in super-G, Marco Odermatt built it on the top in the Fishnet and in the Fall Away. He then conceded some time before putting the turbo back on in the final game. Thanks to this 13th success in the World Cup, he is firmly in the lead overall with 260 points out of a possible 300.
Stefan Rogentin, who finished in 9th place, performed quite well. Niels Hintermann finished 22nd. Beat Feuz, Justin Murisier, Loïc Meillard and Gino Caviezel finished outside the top-30.
Big scare for Mauro Caviezel
Back this season, Mauro Caviezel unfortunately ended up in the safety nets. The Grison remained motionless for a long time on the track, before the rescuers reached him. TV cameras then showed the skier with 12 World Cup podiums standing, but his face clearly scarred by the fall. The severity and nature of his injuries are not yet known.
Caviezel returned to competition this winter following 2 white seasons. He had suffered a traumatic brain injury following a crash in training at Garmisch. Subsequently, he suffered from impaired vision.
