Lara Gut-Behrami had a great first run at the giant Kronplatz (or Plan de Corones), in the Italian Dolomites. She indeed set the second fastest time, 13 hundredths behind the American Mikaela Shiffrin, who seems well on her way to establishing a record in women’s alpine skiing.

If she wins at the start of the afternoon, Shiffrin will indeed pick up her 83rd success in the World Cup, becoming the first skier to achieve such a performance, and leaving Lindsey Vonn second skier of all time with 82 successes.

The Italian Federica Brignone (3rd at 0”27), the Canadian Valérie Grenier (4th at 0”76) and the American Paula Moltzan (5th at 0”84) have not yet said their last word.

All the other competitors are beyond a second apart. And in particular the other Swiss women, completely dropped.

Andrea Ellenberger (26th at 2”71) and Michelle Gisin (28th at 2”96) will see the second round. On the other hand, this will not be the case for Vanessa Kasper (33rd at 3”29), Valaisanne Camille Rast (40th at 3”88), Viviane Haerri (47th at 4”60) and Valaisanne Melanie Meillard (48th at 4”85). Simone Wild, who was off to a good start (8th in the 3rd split), was eliminated three doors from the finish line.

Round two is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
