Alpine skiing: Feller in Wengen in an unusual role

If Feller goes one better in Switzerland, he would be the first man in four years to win at least three slaloms in one season. In 2019/20, both the Frenchman Clement Noel and the Swiss Daniel Yule were successful three times. However, no Austrian has won in Wengen since Marcel Hirscher in 2018, and after Feller’s second place in 2019, there has not been another podium finish to celebrate.

“The boys certainly have a lot of self-confidence. But it starts from scratch again,” said ÖSV head coach Marko Pfeifer. “We may not have had it that easy in Wengen in recent years, but we have to go for it, be convinced, then I hope that we can at least take home a podium.”

In addition to Feller, the injured Marco Schwarz (winner Madonna, second Gurgl), Michael Matt (third Gurgl) and Dominik Raschner (third Adelboden) were responsible for the four other ÖSV podium places this winter. Black can no longer be there this season, the others already mentioned will be joined in Wengen by Fabio Gstrein, Adrian Pertl, Johannes Strolz, Joshua Sturm and Zudrell.

Zudrell makes his World Cup debut

The young Vorarlberger, whom young coaches describe as a rough diamond with enormous potential, was actually supposed to make his European Cup debut in Berchtesgaden this weekend. After he recently finished first and second in two FIS slaloms in Obdach, Zudrell was summoned to Wengen by ÖSV head coach Marko Pfeifer for the classic.

“Moritz really recommended himself at the FIS races, he showed off well. And why shouldn’t we even give a boy such a chance? I’m very open to that. This also sends a signal to the boys that if they present themselves well, they will soon be able to compete in the World Cup,” explained Pfeifer.

Zudrell only found out about his opportunity on Monday and then cut a good figure during training in St. Anton under technical head coach Martin Kroisleitner. “He skis in several disciplines and is technically good at skiing. I have only rarely seen him personally, I have to be completely honest,” said Pfeifer and stated: “We still have good young skiers in Austria.”
