Alpine skiing: Crans-Montana sets an example and cancels its night slalom
While restrictions on electrical energy will be required during the winter, the organizers of this competition are opting for responsible behavior. See you in 2024… maybe.
Since 2019, the resort of Crans-Montana has been organizing a nocturnal exhibition slalom, which brings together the best specialists in the discipline. Big names in the World Cup like Clément Noël and Kristoffer Jakobsen have already won the Valais event. It has nothing official, but it pleases.
Reluctant cancellation
The next edition should have taken place on January 11, 2023. Given the restrictions requested at all levels in terms of electrical energy, its organizers preferred to cancel it. “We took this decision reluctantly, but we want to set an example,” explains Marius Robyr, president of the organizing committee for the Crans-Montana World Cup races and this invitational slalom.
However, the impact on electricity consumption in the region would not have been very significant… “It’s true. But the Haut-Plateau has already decided to reduce its consumption during the winter tourist season. We would not have seen ourselves lighting up the entire bottom of our track for two full evenings. And what image would we have sent back towards the plain? Individuals should be careful and not us. It is not logical”, continues Marius Robyr.
Appointment maintained for 2024
The idea of this night slalom will not be abandoned. The event should once more be on the Crans-Montana entertainment program in January 2024. This competition offers an original format. The route is shorter and therefore allows three qualifying heats and a final to be linked together. During each descent, the worst competitors are eliminated. Suspense guaranteed.
