SUMMARY: Alouettes 29 – Elks 21 (2nd half)
MONTREAL – The Montreal Alouettes face the Edmonton Elks at Commonwealth Stadium in hopes of extending their winning streak to four on Saturday.
By virtue of the 33-30 defeat suffered by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats once morest the British Columbia Lions on Friday, the Birds (9-7-0) are already assured of playing in the Eastern semi-final at the House.
Tre Ford joined Kyran Moore on 13 yards to score a touchdown in favor of the Elks on the first sequence of the game, which was riddled with bad tackles and poor coverage by the Alouettes.
The Als’ streak of minutes without shooting stopped at 183:39 (three complete games and 3:39 of play), the longest streak of its kind in the CFL this season.
However, the Als scored their first points immediately on a field goal by Jose Maltos, who made his first 50-yard precision kick in the league.
The Elks offense extended its lead by crossing the end zone for the second time in a row on a sneak from Taylor Cornelius, then they added more to lead 21-3 in the second quarter.
The Alouettes’ offense slowly began to gain momentum and Cody Fajardo threw his 13th touchdown pass of the season to Tyson Philpot late in the first half to reduce the gap to 21-10. It was Philpot’s fourth touchdown in five games.
The wind continued to change sides when Lwal Uguak lost the ball to the opposing quarterback and Mustafa Johnson recovered it to score the ninth defensive touchdown of the year for the Birds, who trailed by only 4 points with 2:40 left.
Another successful field goal then allowed the Alouettes to get within one point, but the pinnacle came in the final seconds before halftime on a superb run by Walter Fletcher who crossed the field following recovering a field goal missed by the opponent to the right of the target.
This is the first meeting between the Als and Elks this season. In 2022, the Elks beat the Montreal Alouettes 32 to 31 at Percival-Molson Memorial Stadium in July. Nearly three months later, the Alouettes defeated Edmonton 25-18 at home.
The Edmonton team, which has a record of 4-12-0, is eliminated on paper.
