It wasn’t an opponent that ended Montreal Alouettes wide receiver Tyson Philpot’s 2024 season, but rather the synthetic field at Percival Molson Stadium.
The 24-year-old sensation made this revelation to journalist Herb Zurkowsky, of the daily The Gazette.
During the first quarter of a game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on August 10, Philpot caught a short pass from Davis Alexander, but got his cleats stuck in the artificial turf at McGill University’s stadium.
“In that situation, the outcome would have been the same for anyone,” Philpot said. “The way I turned around and got tackled, my foot got stuck in the turf.”
The British Columbian suffered damage to the Lisfranc ligament in one of his feet. It’s a very rare injury that required surgery. In August, surgeons inserted a screw into his foot. The athlete will return under the knife in December to have it removed.
On September 12, Philpot announced on his Instagram account that he would not return to play this year. However, he said he was confident he could have returned to play this season because he was not feeling any pain after the injury.
“There was a strange feeling, but no pain,” he said.
This type of injury can also take up to a year to fully heal. Fortunately for Philpot and the Alouettes, his recovery period was estimated at nine months, as he did not suffer any fractures. He will, however, spend the next few months in an orthopedic walking boot.
A missed opportunity
By the time his campaign ended, Philpot was the Als’ leading receiver. The Calgary Dinos product had 58 catches for 772 yards and five touchdowns in just nine games.
His production was a balm for the club’s unfortunates, as it continued to see its receivers fall in combat one after the other.
“The team was looking for a number 1 receiver. I was proud of the way I played, I had decided to become [le numéro 1]and I was doing it,” Philpot said regretfully.
The injury also puts on hold the Canadian’s other big aspiration: getting a chance to play in the NFL.
The Alouettes’ first-round pick in the 2022 draft has never hidden the fact that he would like to play in the Goodell circuit, having obtained the opportunity to train with the Pittsburgh Steelers after his first season.
“Until someone tells me no, it’s still my dream and I’m very confident,” he said on the subject. “I love being in Montreal and there’s no other place I would want to play. But I’m convinced that if I play at my best for a full season, I’ll really have a chance. I’ll give it my all. If it’s not enough, it’s not enough. It’s just pushed back a year.”
