//Corrects the third paragraph: Alonso is fourth in the World Cup//
Lusail (Qatar), Oct 8 (EFE).- Spaniard Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), double Formula One world champion, who this Sunday finished sixth in the Qatar Grand Prix, the seventeenth of the championship, told EFE in the Lusail circuit that leaves “happy”, because the car was better than expected, “but with a bittersweet taste” due to its off-track that prevented it from finishing “at least in the top 5”.
“I’m happy with the weekend, because following finishing ninth in Monza (Italy), not scoring points in Singapore and being ninth in Japan, we thought that Qatar was going to be a difficult circuit for us and that we weren’t going to score too many points. But the car was more competitive than expected, on par with Ferrari and very close to Mercedes,” the Asturian double world champion explained to EFE this Sunday in the mixed zone of the Lusail circuit, where two years ago he signed one of his 105 podiums.
“So today’s points are important for the constructors’ World Cup,” stressed Alonso, in a second youth at 42 years old, who – with seven podiums so far this season – is fourth in the World Cup, behind the dominant Red Bull of the Dutch Max Verstappen, already mathematically three-time world champion; and the Mexican Sergio Pérez; and the Englishman Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes).
“But then, in the race itself, seeing myself third in the first lap and with a chance of finishing at least in the ‘top 5’, then it felt bad when I left the track, damaged the bottom of the car and that compromised my race. And that’s why I’m leaving with a bittersweet taste,” the brilliant Asturian driver explained to EFE this Sunday in Qatar. EFE
