Along with the US presidential election, there is also a thorny competition in the Senate

Along with the presidential elections, the US Senate elections are also fiercely contested between the Republicans and the Democrats.

Each state has 2 seats in the US Senate and thus the US upper house has a total of 100 seats and each senator is elected for 6 years and one-third of the members retire after every 2 years.

American senators are directly elected by popular vote, and this year, along with the presidential and House of Representatives (lower house) elections, the people have also used the right to vote for senators.

With the current presidential election, there are 35 US Senate seats up for election, of which 33 senators have retired and 2 have died.

Currently, the number of Republicans in the US Senate is 53, while the Democrats have 47. Out of the current 35 seats up for election, 23 Republicans and 12 Democrats are running for vacant seats.

According to the American news agency AP, out of the 35 Senate seats so far, Republicans have won 17 seats and Democrats 12 seats, while the counting process is ongoing for 6 seats.

After the current election results, the number of Republicans in the Senate has increased to 47, while the number of Democrats is 45, but they have the support of 2 independent candidates and thus they also have the support of 47 members.

In the US Senate, any party needs the support of 51 members to get a simple majority and at this time the results of 6 seats are very important which will decide the majority in the House.

It should be noted that the Republicans had a majority of 6 members in the current Senate due to which American President Donald Trump did not face any difficulty in passing legislation.
