The migration crisis worsens as this year progresses. Thousands of Cubans continue to leave the Island looking for a more promising future. Most of them try to reach the United States by some means.

Some options are more dangerous than others but it is a fact that Cubans do not cease their efforts to emigrate. By the way, the statistics are alarming, especially in the case of minors who have left the country.

During the most recent six months, around 800 unaccompanied minors crossed the southern border of the United States.

On the subject, the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) revealed that last December was the month in which the most unaccompanied minors entered. To compile the data, the first six months of fiscal year 2024 are taken into account; So 168 in total arrived.

Migration of minors

In general, there were 791 minors not accompanied by their parents during the aforementioned period. This figure is lower than that recorded at the same stage in 2023. That year, regarding 1,183 were counted. Meanwhile, in 2022, 231 were detected.

It is estimated that the number of Cuban migrant children will increase in the coming months. Minors arriving at border points unaccompanied are exempt from expedited deportation.

“The immigration custody of the minor cannot exceed 21 days, with the idea of retaining and processing them in the least restrictive and safest place possible.” This is what the current law on the subject indicates.

United States authorities can send minors to Catholic Charities shelters.

They will achieve the process under the federal protection program for stranded immigrant children. The figures related to minors and migration are an exact sample of the crisis that the Island is suffering today.
