Almagro meets with Palomo and expresses support against corruption – 2024-03-14 03:41:26

The national commissioner against corruption, Santiago Palomo Vila, met with senior officials of the United States Government and international organizations in Washington to discuss the fight against corruption, meetings in which there were offers to support some initiatives that seek to guarantee the transparency in the country.

“We held a productive meeting with Santiago Palomo Vila @santipalomov, Executive Director of the National Commission against Corruption of Guatemala, with whom we discussed our mutual commitment to fight corruption to make democracy better,” Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Almagro added: “I expressed our support for the initiatives of the Anonymous Whistleblower Law and the Beneficial Owners Law that will strengthen the fight against corruption.”

For its part, said commission wrote in X that “in this meeting we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to the fight against corruption in our region.

Palomo Vila reported on his social networks that during his visit to Washington he also held meetings with officials from the United States Department of State, in what he defined as “a step forward to promote transparency, integrity and the fight against corruption.”

In addition, the Commission detailed that Palomo Vila also met in “a fruitful meeting” with Eric Jacobstein, Undersecretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs, who “shared visions for closer collaboration between our countries.”

“By joining forces with civil society organizations, today we took a significant step in our common fight against corruption,” says the Commission.

“Collaboration strengthens our cause for an open and plural democracy, pointing the way to a future without corruption,” the Commission detailed.

In addition, Palomo Vila met with the senators for Florida, Rick Scott, and for Louisiana, Bill Cassidy.

“We thank Senators @SenRickScott of Florida and @SenBillCassidy of Louisiana for a working and collaborative meeting. We discussed key initiatives to combat corruption and strengthen collaboration,” the Commission wrote on its social networks.

“Today we join forces in our fight against corruption: first @Almagro_OEA2015, senators @SenRickScott, @SenBillCassidy and civil society organizations. To strengthen regional collaboration and discuss strategies with national and international actions,” the Guatemalan official wrote in another message.
