Allergist teaches how to properly clean pillows

Do you usually put pillows in the sun to avoid mites and fungi? Allergist Ana Caroline Dela Bianca, from the Brazilian Association of Allergy and Immunology (ASBAI), strongly recommends that you abandon this habit.

The doctor explains that the mites, microorganisms that cause allergies, settle inside the pillows and not on the surface. “If the pillow is exposed to the sun, its interior heats up, which favors the proliferation of mites, fungi and bacteria”, explains Ana Caroline.

The ideal is to leave the pillows in an airy place, keeping them protected by pillowcases, with only indirect light on them. The specialist teaches how to keep the item hygienic:

  • Pillow washing should only be done if drying completely is possible. Ideally, cleaning should be carried out in laundries. Domestic use machines may not provide the necessary performance for complete drying of the item;
  • Pillowcases should be washed every three to four weeks;
  • Pillows must be changed every two years;
  • Try not to sweep and dust bedroom furniture while cleaning. To prevent mites from going into suspension and settling on clean sheets and pillowcases, give preference to the use of damp cloths.
