Alleged Apple HomePod with LCD screen leaks in photos on the internet

A HomePod with a touchscreen on top appeared in photos leaked on social media, and could be a prototype for a future smart speaker update.

The HomePod and HomePod mini don’t have built-in displays, except for a disc on top showing diffuse LED lights as an activity indicator. However, it seems that Apple has ideas to replace this screen with another.

In a photo posted on X (Twitter) by Apple product collector and leaker “KosutamiSan”, a HomePod is pictured with a larger disc on top. Inside this disk there is an image and the text “LcdUTest”, apparently indicating that it is a display.

A series of previous images showed the casing of a HomePod with a “completely different glass on top” intended for a touchscreen. The casing design is “similar to the 2nd generation HomePod”, claims the leaker.

After the images were published on X, sources at 9to5Mac reportedly confirmed that the leak is real, as well as offering details like the codename B720. The sources also claimed that the device pictured was being actively worked on within the company, making it a potential new product rather than a discarded old prototype.

This is not the first time that signs have emerged that Apple is working on a HomePod with a display. In March 2023, Ming-Chi Kuo predicted that a new HomePod would launch in the first half of 2024 with a 7-inch screen, in a device that could boost the company’s smart home strategy.
