Group B favorites? Without a doubt. Favorites for CAN 2024? A lot depends on Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian Pharaohs make their debut against Mozambique.

Despite a glorious past and a record of seven titles, Egypt remains in bitter failures in recent editions. Symbol of this curse, captain and superstar Mohamed Salah, who won everything with Liverpool, but is still waiting for the selection.

What happened yesterday

Ivory Coast did not give in to pressure when launching its African Cup of Nations at home. Opposed to a weak Guinea-Bissau in group A, the Elephants won without putting themselves in danger thanks to goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso (2-0).

The statement

Jean-Louis Gasset, Ivory Coast coach: “It’s hard to win in a full stadium, in front of your country, it’s very difficult psychologically. […] We are relieved of the burden of this first home match, this first pressure match, in front of our supporters.”

And bref

Record in sight for André Ayew: Ghana, four times crowned, is the other power in group B with Egypt. Among his best assets, the always loyal brothers Ayew, André and Jordan. The eldest son of Abedi Pelé will equal the record of Cameroonian Rigobert Song with an 8th participation in the CAN, and could well double it in the number of matches played in the competition. The current coach of Cameroon stopped at 34 matches, André Ayew is at 34 at the dawn of the tournament…

Morocco vs Egypt, war is declared: the Moroccan Azzedine Ounahi ignited the powder in a press conference: “Egypt, which has won seven CANs, does not produce a great game, but it is a team that manages. You can dominate, but they can score the 1-0 goal from a set piece and then a player falls to the right, then another to the left…”. Response from the shepherd to the shepherdess by the Egyptian Mostafa Mohamed: “I did not follow what Azzedine Ounahi said. We have won seven CANs, I invite him to play like us and to win trophies. ” We very much hope for a duel between these two contenders for the trophy.
