Tisza party in the EP:

In his first statements in the European Parliament, Péter Magyar hinted at a differentiated policy for his Tisza party. The EPP has taken note of the “unique actions” of its new member.

“We reject the complete quarantine for entire political formations because that does not correspond to our understanding of democracy,” said Tisza’s vice-president at his first press conference at the EU headquarters. Regarding the EPP’s motion for a resolution, which actually includes support for Ukraine and is therefore fundamentally supported by the Tisza party, Magyar commented critically: “We cannot support the passages in which Hungary as a whole is criticized, or where it is regarding increasing arms deliveries.” The EPP group leader Manfred Weber showed understanding for this special position. In this context, Magyar reiterated his position that the Brussels proceedings once morest the Orbán government were wrong and counterproductive.

On Wednesday, Magyar reiterated from Strasbourg that the Tisza party condemns Russian aggression once morest Ukraine, but rejects any punishment of Hungary for the prime minister’s misguided policies. “We trust in concrete steps towards peace, including our humanitarian mission to Kyiv last week,” he wrote on social media. He also opposed the practice of denying Fidesz positions in the EP. “In our view, the votes of all citizens are equal, regardless of whether they are cast for a politician from the government or the opposition camp. We condemn the policies of the Orbán government, but will never support Hungary and its citizens being punished for them.”
