Cuban sports authorities announced the suspension of all sporting events on the island, due to the transportation and fuel crisis that is currently being experienced. Below we leave you the official note.

“Due to the complex situation that the country is going through with the availability of fuel, the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) has decided to stop national events in development and postpone those related to football, cycling, softball, basketball and baseball, of all categories, which were scheduled for the next few days,” it reads.

“Given a more favorable context for transportation, participants in the postponed events will be informed regarding the rescheduling of the sports calendar,” they add.

Fuel crisis affects Cuba

The Cuban government announced the suspension of all sports activities in the country due to the energy crisis affecting the island. Among the affected events is the National Baseball Series, the sporting event most followed by Cubans, which was scheduled to begin on March 9.

The national little league baseball tournament, the cycling tour to the east and the national men’s hockey championship, among others, are also canceled. The National Football League, which was being played in all categories, is also paralyzed, as well as other chess competitions and other disciplines.

The energy situation in Cuba has worsened in recent weeks, with frequent and prolonged blackouts that affect the population and basic services.

This week the Cuban government pointed out the following: “We have a significant level of unavailability, especially in distributed generation and in part of the floating plants… Unquestionably, fuel is marking the fundamental unavailability that causes effects from morning to night. evening”.

This was confirmed by the technical director of the Cuban Electrical Union (UNE), Lázaro Guerra Hernández.
