The most successful was the initiative to keep daylight saving time.
The National Council has to deal with seven other referendums. All initiatives that were due for registration by Monday cleared the necessary hurdle of 100,000 signatures. The request “retention of summer time” (by Doris Galbruner) was most popular with 168,706 signatories. That is 2.66 percent of the 6,345,470 voters – and thus rank 49 of the 80 requests so far.
Just behind, in 51st place, was the “GIS Fees No” initiative by a group led by attorney Marcus Hohenecker – with 167,406 signatures or 2.64 percent. A second petition from this group, “Securing an independent judiciary”, ranked 54th with 2.26 percent (143,217 signatures). The popular petition presented by Robert Marschall, “Nehammer muss weg!” There were 106,440 supporters for this, which makes 1.68 percent and rank 67.
The number of referendums launched has risen sharply in recent years. Half of the now 80 requests that were required to be registered come from the past five years. This is because in 2018 support for both phases, initiation and enrollment week, has been significantly eased. Now those entitled to vote can also sign online using a mobile phone signature and no longer just at their main residence, but at every municipal office in Austria.
Of the 80 referendums launched so far, only twelve have not made it into parliament, i.e. they have not found 100,000 supporters. The most successful referendum is still the “Against Construction Conference Center” presented by the ÖVP in 1982 with 25.74 percent or 1,361,562 signatures. Since requests for more than 100,000 signatures only have to be dealt with in parliament but not implemented, the Vienna conference center was built anyway.
