International Fruit Day: Why green lemons are just as ripe as yellow ones and why warm winters are an additional concern.

Vienna (OTS) –

The lemon, botanically known as Citrus limon, has become an integral part of our society. Brings to International Fruit Day GLOBAL 2000 the yellow all-rounder in front of the curtain.

When and where exactly the first lemon as we know it today was harvested has not been fully clarified to this day. What is certain is that the fruit we know today as the lemon was created as a cross between citron and bitter orange. Records suggest that the first lemon caused a “sour surprise” around 1000 years ago.

From medical use to care products and countless types of processing as food – the lemon is not only omnipresent in its growing areas. As a natural source of vitamins C, calcium, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus, lemons are a favorite among consumers around the world. A tree can provide bountiful harvests for up to 40 years.

Robust
The warm, humid climate in the Mediterranean region offers ideal conditions for lemons, so that harvest is often possible all year round. However, “peak season” for fresh lemons is September to May. The plants are a lot more robust than their related tangerines, but they are not completely protected from pest infestation either. Above all, scale insects and the Mediterranean fly cause headaches for the producers. Especially in winter, rising temperatures lead to an increased occurrence of uninvited insects.

GLOBAL 2000 controlled as part of the Pesticide Reduction Program together with REWE, we have been regularly supplying lemons from all over the world for almost two decades. The samples taken here consistently show low levels of pesticide contamination.

Important for consumers to know: The term “untreated peel” only applies to the waiver of funds that are applied following the harvest. However, such fruits are treated with pesticides in the field and these can then also be found in the product or on the skin. GLOBAL 2000 therefore recommends only using organically produced goods for further processing of the shell. These are free of chemical-synthetic pesticides.

Facts regarding the lemon:

Ripe lemons can also be green

Only in winter, when the temperature differences between day and night become greater, do lemons naturally get their characteristic bright yellow color because the green pigment chlorophyll is broken down. The acceptance of green lemons in Austria, on the other hand, still has room for improvement

There are countless lemon “varieties”

Due to the constant flow of new hybrids, it is almost impossible to keep track of all lemon varieties. Well-known varieties have the catchy names Primofiori, Verna or Eureka. If you like it more unusual and intense in taste, we recommend Buddha’s Hand, Cedro or lemons from the Italian region around Amalfi

How do I recognize good, ripe lemons?

Because of its intense scent, a firm shell and a thing that no dark to black spots can be seen around the so-called “navel”.

European lemons play a minor role on the world market

The world’s largest producing countries China, India and Mexico each provide people with two to three times as many lemons as the European leader Spain

Lemons are packaged “for the respective market”.

Depending on what the consumers want in the respective target country, lemon producers pack their goods with a wide variety of materials. It is not uncommon for different options to be offered in individual production facilities

Lemons help with many ailments

It doesn’t matter whether you have gastrointestinal diseases, fever, inflammation, rheumatism, venous insufficiency, high blood pressure, cramps, liver problems, anemia or inflammation of the nose and ears – the lemon can (limitedly) help

Summer for the eyes

Those who want to see the white lemon blossom have the best chances between May and August
