All iPhones Will Have ProMotion and Always-On Display by 2025, Says Ross Young

With the iPhones 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, the Apple started using the LTPO technologyLow-temperature polycrystalline oxidor low-temperature polycrystalline oxide.”>1 on top-of-the-line model displays. With greater energy efficiency, this type of screen was essential for the implementation of features such as ProMotion (with variable rate up to 120Hz), and the Always On Screen (which reduces this rate down to 1Hz).

Fortunately, according to analyst Ross Young, from DSCC, we are not that far from seeing this technology be expanded to entry-level iPhones. With greater production capacities and, consequently, the reduction of manufacturing costs, the “iPhones 17”in 2025, should have LTPO screens — therefore, also with the aforementioned resources, according to Young.

Apple is expected to fully adopt LTPO in 2025, even entry-level models will get the 120Hz refresh rate finally.

Young posted the above schematic showing when changes to iPhone displays might happen. As he himself had previously suggested, top-of-the-line models should have sensors for Face ID under the screen in 2025while entry-level iPhones will only be able to receive this upgrade two years later, in 2027 — year in which the most advanced ones should also have the front camera under the screen.

As the information refers to the distant future, it is possible that some details will be modified until the releases occur. In any case, rumors show that there is an expectation in the display industry that features currently reserved for the most advanced iPhones are expanded to entry-level models.

This idea makes sense if we look at Apple’s history of precisely including more innovative features in the more expensive iPhones (among other products) and then expanding these features to cheaper models. Let’s wait now to see how things will play out in the future.
