Recently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted the sanction on the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG) and allowed Guatemalan athletes the opportunity to compete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on behalf of Guatemala, something that did not happen in the Central American Games and of the Caribbean and Pan American Games of 2023.
This news was taken positively by national athletes who are classified for the Olympic Games and also by those who are still looking for a ticket to the event that will take place in the capital of France from July 26 to August 11.
“Qualifying for the Olympic Games is the great gift and dream of every athlete, because it is four years of hard work and completing it in this way is the best thing that can happen to you as an athlete.. Knowing that we would go without being able to represent Guatemala is not the same feeling, but now that they give us that good news it is worth celebrating, because it is the best for Guatemalan sports.“said Kevin Cordón, a badminton player who is one step away from qualifying for his fifth Olympic Games.
“We prepare to represent our country. I am happy because we will carry our flag“said José Barrondo, who was the first athlete to qualify for Paris 2024.
“This decision of the IOC was thanks to the action taken by the Assembly. I’m happy“, said Waleska Soto, classified in shooting with hunting weapons.
Currently, there are 10 athletes who have guaranteed their presence in the next edition of the Olympic Games: three women and seven men in four sports.
Athletes classified for Paris 2024
José Barrondo, athletics / 20 kilometers march
He was the first Guatemalan to qualify for Paris 2024. He obtained his Olympic quota on June 3, 2023 in the International Grand Prix Cantons of La Coruña when he achieved a time of 1:19:42. The games in Paris will be his second.
Luis Grijalva, athletics / 5 thousand meters
On August 31, 2023, Luis Grijalva became the second Guatemalan athlete to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
