All about the new iPhone SE

Why not a more compact, simpler and affordable device? The iPhone SE is precisely aimed at this less flashy clientele, closer to their basic needs in terms of mobile telephony.

Apple relaunched the SE line in 2020 with a 4.7″ screen and an A13 Bionic chip while the very first version dates back to 2016 with a 4″ screen and an A9 chip, which in itself was a more capable version of the iPhone 5S.

With this SE (Special Edition or SE 3) range, Apple can go directly once morest Android competitors with an affordable product than its high-end phones.

The new iPhone SE presented yesterday uses a recipe well mastered by Apple, which thus offers a device equipped with the latest technologies in an older design.

Concretely, this translates into Touch ID fingerprint unlocking, a classic shell with rounded corners and wider borders, a 4.7 “Retina HD screen, a simple wide-angle camera, water resistance IP67 and the latest 6-core A15 Bionic chip, the same as the current iPhone 13.

On the connection side, everything is there:

  • Bluetooth 5.0
  • WiFi 6
  • LTE and 5G

What we don’t find are Face ID, thin bezels, ultra wide-angle, telephoto and optical zoom cameras, night mode, HDR Dolby Vision 4K video recording, Super Retina XDR display (the Apple’s version of HDR), variable refresh rate, wireless charging, and a few lesser features.

Good point, with the same processing power as the other iPhone 13s, the SE model delivers identical performance for a host of uses like Deep Fusion computational photography, web page processing and Dolby Vision video playback.

Touch ID

There are still a lot of people who are uncomfortable with face unlock being always on. The fingerprint reader is always available, whether it’s in your pocket or on the desk. It’s simple, effective.

With its wider edges, handling the phone is easier without having to grab it by placing your fingers on the touch screen.

System software

System software remains a big reason to buy the new phone, rather than opting for a cheaper older device with similar specs. Longer term, the new SE device will continue to receive iOS updates for years to come.
