The drivers’ union of the Association for the Financing of Urban Transport Professionals (AFTU) has called a strike for 72 hours. With this movement of mood which started this morning, the users find it difficult to move in the Senegalese capital.
Founded on April 3, 2001 in Dakar, the Aftu aims to contribute to the renewal of the coach and bus fleet, but also the professionalization of news in the areas of operation and to improve the quality of service offered to customers.

This Monday, many people were unable to get to their places of work on time for lack of means of transport because of the strike by Aftu employees. These users are obliged to take other means of transport to make the trip. People who did not have the information throughout the weekend went to the stops hoping to take their preferred line, in vain.
Some traveled more than 30 minutes before realizing the Aftu bus stop. because it happens where the watchword is not respected by some.
The private transport sector has become an equation for the government in power. We remember the general strike of private carriers which led to scenes of aggression and huge losses on the economy of Senegal.

In their notebook of grievances, bus drivers and ticket sellers demand the improvement of their working conditions. In this lot of grievances, figure the salary increase for some and the support of Aftu employees.
An association created on the initiative of the State with the support of the World Bank which brings together fourteen (14) GIE of transporters, government representatives (the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of Transport) and the CETUD whose mission is to facilitate the movement of citizens throughout the country.

« Since 2005, we have been going through a difficult period in the transport sector. We have issued strike notices, memorandums of understanding on certain working conditions. But today we have decided to review our way of fighting. Because the workers of Aftu unanimously decided to make themselves heard to denounce the working conditions. The carriers set us the working hour from 04:00 am to 11:00 pm. we have no contract let alone a social security fund not to mention the IPM. But more serious still the drivers contribute to pay the prescription of the comrades. We have cases of serious accidents, drivers amputated with an arm, etc. We are obliged to help them. “, confided a trade unionist.
According to one of the trade unionists of the box, the drivers go through difficult periods in their lives because the transporters (bus owners) do not respect the charters of the workers of the association. Two months ago, the association increased the transport rate despite government bans, but does not want to meet the employees’ demand.
According to Djiby Ndiaye, member of the council of the association, this strike is respected at 95% throughout the national territory.
« This strike is triggered by the drivers and receivers of the Aftu who are in some GIE. Today if we directly index the Aftu it is a mistake because it is an association that brings together carriers and employees. These are the responsibility of the operators. Some have a work contract but others do not. The movement of mood is a 95% success even if some did not want to respect the watchword.
