It is not a question of reducing the road space devoted to cars, but rather of inducing a narrowing of the roads which would encourage more careful driving. On these roadways, motorists must, by default, drive in the middle of the road. They can bite on the cycling lanes to meet a vehicle or to overtake. Provided there are no cyclists on the track, of course.
How does Brussels intend to limit the place of large SUVs in traffic? Minister Van den Brandt has her own idea
An uncommon device
The device was, however, incomplete since the “default” speed limit was missing. It is now done. Since October 30, the Belgian Monitor has specified that the speed limit has been increased to 70 kilometers per hour, unless signs mention a lower speed. This speed regulation was already in force in Flanders and Brussels.
For the moment, this limitation will mainly be of interest to applicants for a driving license. In fact, central lane roadways are not very developed in Walloon territory. It must be said that the device is not particularly suitable for roads in the south of the country. The SPW-Mobility recommends their deployment in areas with low traffic density (less than 3,000 vehicles per day) or in sparsely built-up areas. You should also avoid places where visibility is not optimal, for example because of terrain or bends.
”The various bodies concerned by Wallonia’s cycle mobility strategy agree that this type of system should not be generalized straight away. What is most important is to put in place the right cycling arrangements according to the context and the configuration of the place. The central lane roadway is an option that adds to a range of solutions and an assessment, on a case-by-case basis, of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of development remains necessary,” specifies the Walloon public service.
