Alibaba’s Promised Jobs at Liege Airport: The Reality and Implications Revealed

Le Soir indicates in its Thursday edition that it was able to read the agreement linking Alibaba to the airport of Liege Airport and the jobs of the Chinese company are less guaranteed than expected, underlines the daily.

On the issue of employment, we discover that Alibaba “will make its best efforts to obtain an employment level of 20 to 25 positions – full-time equivalent (FTE) – per hectare”, i.e. a minimum objective of 350 FTEs.

However, the former Minister Jean-Luc Crucke (MR then Les Engagés), then in charge of Airports, assured in April 2019 that “Cainiao’s commitment relates to the creation of a minimum of 25 jobs per hectare made available , which is equivalent to 600 jobs, depending on the area granted”, before stating a few months later that “the number of direct jobs (…) is included in the contract signed with Alibaba.”

In this case, writes Le Soir, the agreement does not provide for any sanction if Alibaba does not reach this threshold. In the office of the current minister Adrien Dolimont (MR), it is confirmed that the agreement does not allow immediate termination if the employment criterion is not respected. “But there is an obligation, even if it is of means”, we add.

Liege Airport, the Dolimont firm and Cainiao pragmatically ensure that this “employment” criterion, on the ground, is largely respected.
