Alibaba’s 128-core ARM chip is ready for action

The Yitian 710 it’s a custom ARM processor from the folks at Alibaba Cloudwhich was presented for the first time in October.

This custom ARM chip is going to power instances of Elastic Compute Service (ECS) for a variable number of vCPUs, each of which will be tied to a physical core.

The firm is going to start the preview with support for about 100 clients. For these clients, a team of 4 vCPUs, 16GB of memory and 3Gbit/sec network bandwidth. This preview will last about two months.

The powerful processor Yitian 710 personalized from Ali Baba is being manufactured by the people of TSMC with a 5 nm node. This processor has more than 60,000 million transistors, for about 128 cores of the ARM v9 type.

The specifications indicate that the chip operates at a speed of 3.2 GHz with 8 memory channels of the type DDR5 and up to 96 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

This seems to be quite a statement of intent to compete with the EPYC and Xeon series, which is currently dominating the server market.

According to Alibaba, Yitian offers a “cost-effectiveness ratio” that is double that of its previous generation instances powered by chips from Intel and AMD, so this investment in your own technology will pay off more in the long run.
