On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 23, authorities captured aliases “Érika” and “Firu,” leaders of the FARC dissidents, in the Pedro Nel Ospina battalion of the National Army, located in Bello, Antioquia. The detainees were intercepted while they were traveling in a caravan of seven armored trucks of the National Protection Unit (UNP).

The operation began on Tuesday morning when National Army troops stopped the caravan at a checkpoint in the northeast of Antioquia. The occupants of the vehicles refused to get out, which led the authorities to transfer them to the battalion for a safer and more thorough inspection. According to reports from the governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, weapons and a significant amount of cash were found during the inspection.

Alias ”Érika”, operating in the department of Caquetá, and Édgar de Jesús Orrego Arango, alias “Firu”, leader of Structure 36 of the FARC dissidents, were identified during the process.

UNP director Augusto Rodriguez confirmed that after the opening of the vehicles and the searches, alias “Firu” was captured due to an existing arrest warrant. “Well, at this time the vehicles have already been opened, there have already been searches and the identification of the people has also begun. Alias “Firu” was captured and 60 million pesos in cash were also found in one of the vans so far, that is what they report to me from the site,” said Rodriguez.

Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine whether the detainees and their companions were involved in transporting weapons from Venezuela.
