Algodão Paraíba Project brings together companies in fashion show

Faced with changes in consumer attitudes, the sustainable fashion market has recorded significant growth in recent years. According to data from Ethical Fashion Global Market, the ethical fashion industry is currently worth more than $6.5 billion. This number is expected to reach $15 billion by 2030. The organic segment, with a projected compound annual growth rate of 16.2%, is expected to be the fastest growing segment.

Keeping an eye on market demand, the Algodão Paraíba Project, with textile and clothing industries from different states, will present a fashion show at the 7th edition of the sustainable fashion week Brasil Eco Fashion Week (BEFW), in São Paulo. The models will display pieces from textile companies Companhia Industrial Cataguases, Dalila Têxtil, Ecosimple, Santa Luzia Redes, Decoração and Texpar (from the Unitêxtil group). The clothing and accessories companies will be represented by D’Cotton, Dona Chica, Makano and Natural Cotton Color. The pieces will be combined with each other. Trópicca’s shoes will be alongside others found in the popular market in Paraíba.

Production model is a reference and seeks international certification

The Algodão Paraíba Project encompasses eight municipalities in the semi-arid region of the State. With more than 600 hectares of planted area, the project involves around 300 farming families from rural settlements and quilombola communities organized in cooperatives. The cotton field production model has become a reference in case studies with themes related to Local Productive Arrangements (APL) and sustainability since cultivation is carried out through a purchase contract guaranteed by entrepreneurs with a farmer cooperative that includes quilombola communities.

Francisca Vieira, CEO of the Natural Cotton Color brand and mentor of the Algodão Paraíba Project, highlights the importance of collaboration with the textile industry. According to her, the presence of companies in the sector is crucial for ethical and sustainable fashion, since clothing production demands quality knitwear and fabrics. “These partnerships have been essential not only in supplying inputs, but also in contributing to local infrastructure, with processing machines that are promoting a true revolution in the fields of Paraíba,” she says.

The parade represents the result achieved by the Algodão Paraíba Project, which is now striving to achieve the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). International certification defines high-level environmental criteria throughout the supply chain of organic textile products — covering everything from harvesting to production and marketing of products.

Ethical and sustainable fashion in a segmented event

The brands gathered at the show stand out for their positioning in the ethical and sustainable fashion industry. Some, like Natural Cotton Color, display cotton in natural tones with nuances of beige and brown from the colored cotton from Paraíba that is already born with the colors. Others, such as the pieces made by Dalila Têxtil and Santa Luzia, come from the recycling of defibrated fabrics. This waste is carefully separated by color and, without the need for dyeing, is reconstituted to create unique and sustainable pieces, thus reflecting the principles of circular fashion.

Armando Dantas, executive director of Santa Luzia, highlights that the company’s presence reflects the intersection between fashion and decoration, especially in the context of the contemporary lifestyle. On the catwalk, some items such as sofa blankets will be reinterpreted as shawls for the body. “Consumers committed to sustainability are attentive to all choices, whether personal use, food or household products. It’s about a lifestyle,” he says.

Rafael Morais, executive director of BEFW, has closely followed the development of the Algodão Paraíba Project since 2017, the year in which he launched the sustainable fashion week and brought together several initiatives to consolidate the event, which now, in 2023, celebrates its seventh edition. Morais highlights that he invited the companies participating in the project to reproduce the impressive parade that he himself saw as a guest on Harvest Day, which took place in October, in Ingá, Paraíba.

Morais declared that BEFW offered space both on the catwalk and in the business hall for these companies to expand the publicity of the Algodão Paraíba Project. For him, this is an action of mutual benefit, as the event meets the growing demands of the market that seeks inputs such as sustainable yarns and fabrics and fashion products, especially those from agroecological and organic cotton. “This synergy demonstrates BEFW’s commitment to being a catalyst for innovative initiatives, endorsing the mission of contributing to positive change in the fashion industry,” he concluded.
