Algeria’s UN representative: Maintaining peace and security cannot be achieved with flowery words in front of cameras

In a speech he delivered during a Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian issue, Ammar Bin Jamaa stressed the urgent need for resolutions supported by follow-up and accountability mechanisms, in order to ensure their implementation.

Ben Jamaa said: “Today, we urgently need decisions supported by strong follow-up and accountability mechanisms. This is why Algeria affirms its belief and conviction that anyone who rejects and does not believe in peace should be forced to do so.”

Ben Jamaa called for taking a serious and clear position on the deteriorating situation in the region.

He stated that “the greatest mission of this Council is to maintain international peace and security, and this cannot be achieved through passing words delivered eloquently in front of the cameras.”

He added: “The seriousness of the situation in the Middle East calls for swift and decisive action, and everyone present should realise that the region is on the brink of the abyss. We must learn the lessons of history to prevent the worst that could happen, and this worst is no less than a full-scale regional war.”

Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations explained that Israel continues its apartheid policies and seeks to implement its plans aimed at ethnic cleansing in Gaza and pushing the West Bank into chaos.

He continued, saying: “The occupying power is also preparing and creating a new reality on the ground. During this year, we have witnessed unprecedented levels of settlement expansion and land annexation, and it appears that Resolution 2334 has not achieved any tangible effect.”

Ben Jamaa expressed his dissatisfaction with Tel Aviv’s impunity, its constant evasion of previous agreements, and its continued violation of international law, which is the basis for the establishment of civilized societies.

He stressed, “If we are serious about protecting future generations from the scourge of war, as we pledged in the United Nations Charter, the solution is clear: peace in the Middle East will not be achieved without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.”

Ben Jamaa spoke about the deteriorating situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, as highlighted by Tor Wennesland, the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, which “shows the terror to which the Palestinians are subjected, from which no one, not even children, is safe.”

He deplores the double standards even in the face of the terror of death, which reveals an inherent disregard for Palestinian lives and is based on the roots of the abhorrent racism that the world has long condemned.

Ben Jamea explained that Palestinian lives are important, denouncing a reality in which it appears as if human principles and rights have been monopolized by one group at the expense of another.
