Algeria’s terrifying submarines raise fears in the West

Talk of Algerian submarines returned, as retired Spanish Admiral Rodriguez Garat said, in a press interview, that “Algeria has submarines, and therefore it is more dangerous to the West.”

During the press interview that came on the occasion of the publication of his book entitled “Drums of War,” the Spanish admiral considered that “submarines are considered a weapon that prevents naval forces from deploying and operating effectively.”

Senior French officers in the French army spoke earlier about the possibility of the Algerian military forces controlling the ports of the Mediterranean, given the military equipment they possess.

French Air Defense and Air Operations Commander, French General Philippe Morales, said, “Algeria has the ability to prevent access to the Strait of Gibraltar, which the military calls the anti-access bubble.”

For his part, the Chief of Staff of the French Navy, Admiral Pierre Vandier, believes that “the Algerian Navy has means that France does not possess.” Pointing out that “Algeria possesses Kilo-type submarines equipped with Caliber cruise missiles that can be launched under the surface.”

The military official added that the Algerian forces possess Russian submarines capable of launching Kalibr missiles.

The French website, “Le Journal de la Freque,” published a previous report, under the title, “Why do Algerian submarines worry other armies,” highlighting the submarines that Algeria possesses, which, according to it, are now worrying neighboring countries.

The report highlighted that the submarines owned by Algeria make the Algerian Navy the only one in the region, along with the Israeli Navy, that can avoid surveillance by other military powers.

According to the same source, Algerian submarines have an operating capacity of up to 300 km for missiles capable of hitting targets at sea or on land.

According to the “Global Firepower” website, which specializes in military affairs, Algeria ranks 15th in the world in the strength of its submarine fleet and first in the Arab world and Africa, with eight Russian-made submarines, including “Black Hole” submarines.
