Algeria’s experience in involving the private sector highlighted in Beirut

BEIRUT – Algeria is taking part in the 2023 Arab Forum for Sustainable Development, organized in Beirut from March 14 to 16, during which the Algerian experience in involving the private sector in sustainable development was highlighted.

Algeria is taking part in this event with a delegation led by the Special Envoy in charge of the Palestinian cause, the Middle East and the Libyan question at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, Noureddine Aouam, composed representatives of the Ministry of Public Works, Hydraulics and Infrastructures, and the Council of the Nation.

The work of the new edition of this annual forum, placed under the theme “Solutions and Action”, focuses on the solutions and incentives to be put in place to accelerate the return to normal during the post-Covid-19 period, the contribution private sector and the full implementation of the 2030 Plan for Sustainable Development.

During a high-level working session, where the experiences of involving the private sector in the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Arab region were reviewed, the representative of Algeria forward the Algerian experience “which took the initiative to carry out this public-private partnership in order to satisfy the needs of the citizens and attenuate the expenses of the State”.

He also highlighted the strategy currently adopted, which allows private operators to access strategic areas that were the responsibility of the State, such as the desalination of sea water and the production of electricity.

The same speaker underlined that the private sector involvement operation in Algeria “has extended to other vital areas, such as transport and renewable energies, hence the imperative to work for the modernization of the legal framework with a view to consecrating this partnership and expanding its fields, capable of becoming a strategic tool for administration and financing in a sustainable manner which makes it possible to preserve the interests of the State and the citizen”.

He also hailed the courageous measures consisting in the decision of the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, to remove all the administrative and bureaucratic obstacles that had hindered the launch of several private investments, a decision which enabled the return to service of the majority of these investments and the creation of tens of thousands of jobs.

The Arab Forum for Sustainable Development is a regional mechanism for monitoring the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab region, organized annually by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia ( CESAO), in cooperation with the Arab League and several UN agencies active in the region.

This session will focus on five goals that will be presented by the High Level Political Forum in New York next July, namely, water and sanitation, energy, industry and innovation, infrastructure and ‘habitat.
