(Agence Ecofin) – Even if it has significant hydrocarbon resources, Algeria also wants to play a role in the energy transition in Africa, in particular thanks to its photovoltaic potential.

In Algeria, a call for tenders for the construction of solar power plants with a total capacity of 2000 MW will be launched in November 2023. This will be the second call for tenders of this type following the one launched by the Sonelgaz group at the end of last February, for the construction of 15 photovoltaic solar power plants for a total power of 2000 MW as well.

The information was communicated on April 13 by the Green Energy Cluster Algeria, following a meeting between its managing director and the Algerian Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr. Mohamed Arkab. We also learn from the same source that the call for tenders will be financed by the State, just like that of February.

The two solar energy projects are part of a 15,000 MW renewable energy production program entrusted to the Sonelgaz group. This program bears witness to Algeria’s ambitions in solar energy in order to diversify its energy mix, which remains largely dominated by fossil sources. 97% of the country’s electricity is in fact generated from fossil fuels, the vast majority of which is gas.
