Algerian Women’s Football: A Long Road to Progression and Recognition

2023-06-01 10:10:42

In Algeria, we imagine that women probably have no place in football. They have neither fields nor clubs, worse, the women’s selection has never been the priority of the Algerian Football Federation which has continued to multiply blunders since the beginning of 2022.

Women’s football has never been a priority within the FAF. Anyway, that’s the impression given. The presidents succeeded one another and with them, the members of the Federal Bureau. However, no one thought of applying the words and the beautiful promises. Even the creation of the women’s sections of Algerian clubs is governed in accordance with the regulations and the requirements of the new CAF specifications. The continental body has put the knife to the clubs’ throats.

We are told about the development of the practice, we are brought back to a coach who has always been immersed in women’s football, but it is considered “useless” to register the Vertes for the qualifications of the Paris 2024 Olympic tournament. Let’s imagine Riyad Mahrez’s teammates not registered in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers… Difficult!

The argument is more serious than the blunder: the absence of a national team at the time and of a women’s football department. It’s true, in 2022, the national women’s team has experienced a bad patch. The selection didn’t even exist anymore. It took almost a year to get everything back on track. And still, the blunders did not stop. The lack of consideration and attention that the leaders of Algerian football give to women’s sport is absurd. This justifies the failure of 2022, a year of waste.

While FIFA is struggling to find a broadcaster for the ninth Women’s World Cup, at present, in Algeria we are still fighting for a place in the green rectangle. Even the academies only concern the young male categories. We are in a negative dynamic of progression and transition.

Kicking the ball has never been unique to men. Women, too, have the right to caress the round leather, to dribble, slalom, shine and compete. But in Algeria it seems to bother some people. There is still a long way to go in women’s football.
