The Algerian thinker, philosopher and translator, Muhammad Shawqi Al-Zein, told Al-Ittihad: “The cultural and intellectual dynamism the UAE is witnessing arouses admiration and interest. The most recent of which is the House of Philosophy in Fujairah, which organized its first international philosophical conference, and I was fortunate to contribute modestly to this cultural movement when I previously participated in issues of (Emirates Cultural) magazine, at the rate of a monthly article between 2018 and 2019, as well as my participation in (Al-Tashkeel) magazine between 2018 and 2019. Now and then with philosophical essays on art and aesthetics. Moreover, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award is an added value in this Emirati cultural and intellectual dynamism that rises to the ranks of international awards, and rewards works of high intellectual quality, in the interest of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi to highlight the bright face of Arab culture at all creative levels of literature, thought and translation. There is no doubt regarding that because of the tremendous efforts made by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi in order to improve offers and improve bids. It is already proceeding according to a tight and harmonious cultural policy, with multiple cultural and educational links. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has realized that human formation passes through culture, and harnesses material and human means for this to achieve this formative philosophy in its cultural and educational aspect, and its efforts in that are successful and fruitful.
Pride in candidacy
About the nomination of his work before the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, says d. Al-Zein: «There is always a sense of pride and honor to be one of the works in the nomination lists for the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, because the candidate realizes that his work takes into account the standards in writing or translation approved by the evaluation committee. There is undoubtedly great competition to win, and participation and qualification for the lists remains rewarding for the candidate and the publisher, because what he gets from that, and beyond being crowned or not, is introducing the work that won the favor.
Dr. confirms. Al-Zein: “I remember receiving with pleasure the news that my translation of Michel de Sarto (Culture in plural: New Cultural Policies) had reached the long list of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award in its seventeenth session for the year 2022/23, which is the second time that one of my works has been nominated for the long list. And before that, the huge book (Culture in Lean Times: Philosophy of Culture in the West and among the Arabs) in 780 pages and issued in 2013 had reached the short list, but it was not fortunate to be crowned.
cultural and educational tasks
Dr. Muhammad Shawqi Al-Zein adds: “The book that I translated and its title (Culture in the plural: New Cultural Policies) is one of the most important books of the French thinker Michel de Sarto (1925-1986), who was unknown in the Arab world. Thanks to my doctoral dissertation on his practical philosophy and my translation of his book (Innovating Daily Life), today it has become known and circulated in historical, philosophical and sociological studies. The book (Culture in Collection) deals with the new cultural policies that can be identified in order to carry out the cultural and educational tasks, and to link culture with the school, the public, the university, and scientific knowledge. Culture here takes the significance of the link between multiple fields, namely the city, art, publicity, school and university, in addition to the social engineering of knowledge as dealt with by Herbert Marcuse and the ABCs of culture between cultural production and daily use in reading and watching. Du Sarto goes beyond the axiom of consumption in contemporary society to talk regarding (intelligence of use) and defend the idea that production has a second life in use, and there is no room for describing those who deal with cultural products as a passive consumer. He wills. Du Sarto’s deliberative idea was new for his time, and is still distinguished by its novelty and originality. This explains the success of his theory of “use intelligence” in anthropological and social circles.
