General Smail Afadjene, the first head of the General Directorate of Technical Intelligence (DGRT), a highly sensitive institution for national security and one of the very discreet branches of the Algerian secret services in charge in particular of monitoring transmissions, eavesdropping and of civil and military communications, was recently relieved of his duties in Algeria and replaced under troubling circumstances.
And for good reason, this general has held his position at the head of the DGRT since the end of April 2019 and he was among the most protected senior officers of the Algerian regime having survived all the purges carried out, first, by the Gaid Salah system and then by the Said Chengriha clan, the current boss of the Algerian Military Institution. But the latter would have decided, according to our sources, to proceed with the dismissal of the one commonly called General Smaïl because of his proximity which had become very suspicious and unacceptable in the eyes of the Algerian Military Institution with Boualem Boualem, the most influential and powerful of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and former boss from 2015 until 2019 of the body for the control and surveillance of telephone and electronic communications, another even more sensitive body and with which the DGRT collaborates very actively.
According to Maghreb-intelligence sources, this dismissal comes in the wake of pressure exerted by the military institution on Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in order to get him to take a firm decision once morest Boualem Boualem by gently removing him from the centers decision-making of the country. The ANP General Staff does not tolerate a “super-advisor” accumulating expanded powers and security prerogatives that might allow him to exercise unhealthy influence on the most sensitive institutions of the State. Postures which recall the practices of the former Bouteflika regime with the sinister figure of Saïd Bouteflika who might impose personal agendas on the country’s most strategic security and military institutions in the name of his privileged relationship with the Head of State.
And to do this, all Boualem Boualem close collaborators who benefit from his support or who are affiliated with his clan at the highest summit of the State are in the crosshairs of the military institution and its General Staff. Our sources certify that General Smaïl will be one element among many others who will have to leave their functions in the days to come, retire or even be subjected to careful investigations by the Military Justice for their supposed links with Boualem Boualem and maneuvers sulphurous politicians.
Finally, it should be noted that General Smaïl Afadjene occupied the position of regional director of technical intelligence (DRT) at the level of the 5th military region (Constantine) before 2019. He was one of the symbols of the rejuvenation of senior executives of the security services of the Army. A fallen Symbol because of his rapprochement deemed excessive and dangerous by the Army General Staff with the controversial Boualem Boualem.
