Algerian oil tanker loaded with fuel arrives in Lebanon

Lebanon’s caretaker Energy Minister Walid Fayyad announced on Tuesday the arrival of the Algerian oil tanker.

He stated that Ain Akr has started unloading its cargo, noting that the cargo will allow the electricity supply to be increased to between 4 and 6 hours.

The Algerian national company, Sonatrach, announced that the tanker, Ain Akr, loaded with fuel oil, sailed to Lebanon on Wednesday evening.

The Algerian company said in a previous statement that the oil tanker will carry the first shipment estimated at 30,000 tons of fuel oil as a first stage.

She stated that it comes in implementation of the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who ordered the supply of Lebanon with the necessary quantities of fuel oil in order to operate power stations and restore electricity in the country.

On August 17, electricity was cut off throughout Lebanon, including the airport, the port of the capital Beirut, prisons, sewage facilities, and drinking water pumping, after the last group of production units at the Zahrani plant went out of service due to the exhaustion of the fuel that operates them, which led to a complete cessation of the electricity supply.

Lebanon is also witnessing a state of tension with the continued exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel amid difficult economic conditions that the country has been experiencing since 2019, as the value of the Lebanese pound has collapsed significantly and prices have risen madly.
