Atlanta, United States (CNN) – The Algerian Foreign Ministry said that Niger has accepted the Algerian mediation offer to address its ongoing political crisis that has exhausted the West African country. On Monday, the Algerian government received confirmation of this acceptance through the Nigerien Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
This step comes within the framework of the initiative proposed by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
This decision, which might affect future diplomatic relations between Niger and Algeria, comes amid a complex political scene resulting from the military coup, international condemnations, and looming threats of military intervention.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “This acceptance of the Algerian initiative strengthens the option of a political solution to the crisis in Niger and opens the way for providing the necessary conditions that will facilitate the end of this crisis by peaceful means and in a way that preserves the interests of Niger and the entire region.”
The ministry added that Tebboune assigned Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf to immediately begin preparatory talks in Namibia with all concerned parties to activate the Algerian initiative.
The political crisis in Niger erupted due to the military coup that took place on July 26, which overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum.
In August, Tebboune launched a political initiative to resolve the crisis in Niger, ensuring respect for the principle of “illegitimacy of unconstitutional changes” and following a six-month transitional period led by civilians. The initiative aims to prevent any foreign military intervention and promote a diplomatic solution to the crisis. In addition to proposing to hold a United Nations conference to restore constitutional order, the Algerian initiative also seeks to provide guarantees to all parties involved in the Niger crisis.
