The Algerian Civil Protection Directorate announced on Tuesday that its teams are still struggling to put out 15 fires in 8 provinces (wilaya) in the north of the country, recalling that the disaster has so far left 34 dead and many injured.

The Civil Protection (governmental) specified, in a press release, that 15 fires broke out in 8 northern provinces: Skikda, Jijel, Béjaïa, Tébessa, Sétif and Tariq (east) as well as Bouira and Médéa (center).

Yesterday Monday, the Algerian Ministry of the Interior announced in a press release that the death toll from the fires which have been continuing since Sunday amounted to 34 dead, including 10 soldiers.

The Interior Ministry said “civil protection teams continue to fight fires in 11 affected provinces, noting that the number of trained personnel has increased to 8,000, in addition to fire engines and water bomber planes.”

For its part, the public prosecutor’s office of the provinces of Béjaïa and Jijel announced on Monday the opening of preliminary investigations to determine the circumstances of the outbreak of the fires.

A few days ago, the Algerian authorities announced the activation of a state of maximum alert in anticipation of the outbreak of forest fires, coinciding with the heat wave which has been raging for weeks.

Most of the wilayas of Algeria are experiencing a record heat wave which has reached 50 degrees in several regions of the Algerian desert as well as the north of the country.
