Algeria – Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf discussed yesterday, Monday, during a phone call with his American counterpart Anthony Blinken, the prospects for Palestine joining as a full member state in the United Nations.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry statement stated that “the discussions between the two ministers focused on developments in the situation in the Palestinian territories, especially in the Gaza Strip.”

The statement added: “Special focus was placed on the ongoing discussions in the Security Council regarding the prospects of Palestine joining as a full member state in the United Nations.”

On Monday, members of the UN Security Council held consultations to discuss the Palestinian application for permanent membership in the United Nations.

On Monday, the Security Council referred the request for full membership in the international organization to the committee concerned with accepting new members, while Washington said that “Palestine’s membership should be negotiated with Tel Aviv,” amid Israel’s rejection of the Palestinian membership request.

New members are accepted into the United Nations by the General Assembly based on the recommendation of the Security Council, where the Council holds an official meeting and refers the request to its permanent committee concerned with accepting new members.

Russia called on all members of the international community to support Palestine’s application for membership in the United Nations.
