Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune paid a two-day official visit to Egypt, where he met his counterpart Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi. A visit which is part of the efforts made by Algeria to emerge from its diplomatic isolation.
The Algerian Head of State ended a two-day official visit to Egypt on January 27, where he met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi, which marks “the return of Algeria as an essential actor and protagonist on the regional and international diplomatic scene”, insists on several occasions the French-speaking daily of State, L’Expression.
The newspaper affirms that today Algeria is regularly called upon by diplomats and officials from Arab and African countries to play the role of“reliable intermediary to curb and solve the problems pending in the said countries in crisis and permanent conflicts”. For the daily, this visit by the Algerian Head of State to Egypt must be “read and re-read by the enemies of Algeria”.
In Egypt, the media were full of praise for Algeria’s key role on the regional diplomatic scene. Asked by the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram, Mustapha Sayej, director of the National School of Political Science in Algiers, believes that this visit is a “a breath of fresh air for the two lungs of the Arab world: Algeria and Egypt”.
Exchanges of diplomatic courtesies
One of the stated objectives of this visit by Abdelmadjid Tebboune to Egypt is Algeria’s ambition to organize an Arab summit on its soil soon. In a joint statement, the Egyptian president says he supports this candidacy.
