Algeria recalls its ambassador to Madrid for consultations following Spain’s declarations about the Sahara

In a press release from the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, made public this Saturday, March 19, the Algerian government has decided to recall its ambassador to Madrid for consultations, with immediate effect, following the declarations of the most high Spanish authorities regarding Spain’s position with regard to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

Here is the text of the Algerian government’s press release: “Very surprised by the declarations of the highest Spanish authorities relating to the Western Sahara file, the Algerian authorities, surprised by this sudden reversal of position of the former administering power of Western Sahara, have decided to recall their ambassador to Madrid for consultations with immediate effect,” the statement said.

It is quite clear that the Algerian government will not digest the pill anytime soon.

As a reminder, Spain adhered to the Moroccan thesis, following several months of hesitation and double talk as to its position concerning the Moroccan Sahara.
