ALGIERS- The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, affirmed that Algeria had made great strides in the field of start-ups, indicating that the objective of the public authorities was to establish a climate promoting the emergence of a generation of “nationalist” university entrepreneurs, capable of contributing to the economic growth of Algeria.
During the periodic interview with representatives of the national media, broadcast on Saturday evening on television and radio channels, the President of the Republic explained that Algeria, which started “from nothing” in the field of start- up, entrepreneurship and innovation, is now ranked sixth or seventh in Africa, with around 5,000 to 6,000 start-ups.
Describing this number as “minimal”, the President of the Republic indicated that the objective was to “create a new generation of entrepreneurs, an honest and nationalist university generation, which will lead Algeria towards globalization”, highlighting the capabilities shown by these companies in the field of innovative services and their contribution to the development of the country’s exports.
One of these start-ups “even succeeded, just nine months following its creation, in exporting the equivalent of 200 million USD”, noted the President of the Republic, assuring that young entrepreneurs “are the future of the country “, in the sense that they contribute significantly to the development of the gross domestic product (GDP) of Algeria, thanks to the services provided by their establishments.
In terms of support for start-ups, President Tebboune indicated that an agreement had been reached with the Chinese authorities to dispatch 300 young Algerian owners of start-ups to China in groups, within the framework of training and to participate competitions, as part of an exhaustive program aimed at training project promoters in several countries, including the United States (Silicon Valley) and South Korea.
Responding to a question on Algeria’s membership of the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), the President of the Republic affirmed that the members of the organization have not yet decided. criteria for accepting new members, adding that Algeria’s candidacy enjoys support within this bloc.
He also returned to the declarations of the president of the BRICS bank and former president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, who considered that Algeria is essential to the group.
In parallel with his accession process, President Tebboune insisted on the importance of Algeria’s participation (with a contribution of 1.5 billion Usd) in the capital of the new development bank under the BRICS, a bank which “has greater financial resources than the World Bank”.
