Algeria aspires to become a major producer of green hydrogen and a major supplier to Europe, but it faces Morocco, a major competitor. The kingdom is one step ahead.
“Algeria is the latest country to embark on the hydrogen race, with a national roadmap that will allow the North African state to produce blue and green hydrogen for export to Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, but it will have to fight once morest Morocco in terms of commercial proximity and reduced transport costs”, analyzes Rethink. Hydrogen will therefore be the new field of competition between the two neighboring countries.

Europe’s ambition is to produce 10 MMTA (million metric tons per year) of hydrogen and to import 10 additional MMTA by 2030, the site reports, stressing that its relative proximity makes Morocco, Egypt and now Algeria preferred destinations for the production of green hydrogen, with the cost of transport potentially representing more than 60% of the final cost, depending on the location.
