Algeria – Seven Algerian political parties announced the establishment of a new political bloc to present a “consensual candidate” for the presidential elections expected on September 7th, stressing that they aim to “promote the national dialogue.”
The seven parties said, during a meeting in Algiers, that their presidential candidate is the Secretary-General of the Republican National Alliance, Belkacem Sahel.
The new bloc explained that it seeks to achieve a number of goals, including “promoting the national dialogue, creating the appropriate climate for the success of the upcoming presidential election, and crystallizing a common vision on various national and international developments.”
For his part, candidate Belkacem Sahel said that the upcoming presidential elections are “a historic date in which various programs will compete,” noting that his candidacy for this election took place within the framework of a “moderate vision in order to restore respect to the Democratic-Republican movement, achieve political reform, and build a strong and diversified economy.”
Saheli stressed that the new political bloc “remains open to all political formations, whether wishing to join or coordinate with it,” as he put it.
The Algerian presidency announced on March 21 that it was decided to hold early presidential elections on September 7, 2024, that is, three months before its originally scheduled date, in a move that surprised the political arena and Algerian public opinion.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that the reason for announcing advance presidential elections is due to technical reasons, which is a return to an acceptable electoral calendar, noting that the 2019 elections were the result of special circumstances.
The Algerian president refused to talk regarding his candidacy for a second term, saying, “It is too early and we are still working.”
