Algeria: e-payment boosted by the coronavirus pandemic

The Company for the Automation of Interbank Transactions and Monetics (Satim) in Algeria has indicated that the coronavirus pandemic has accentuated electronic payment transactions.

In a report sent to the press this weekend, the group stressed that electronic payment has experienced a strong evolution over the period from 2019 to 2021. This thanks to the containment measures and the restriction of movement of citizens.

Thus, the number of electronic payment terminals (TPE) rose from 23,762 units in 2019 to 39,000 units in 2021, an increase of 64%. This figure reached 32,347 units in 2020, an increase of 36% compared to 2019.

Regarding payment cards, they reached 10.89 million in 2021, up 22% compared to 2019, once morest 9.62 million cards in 2020. As for the number of online stores, it increased by 297% between 2019 and 2021, with 63 stores in 2020.

For their part, ATMs increased by 88% between 2019 and 2021, from 1,621 to 3,053.

In addition, the number of automatic withdrawal operations amounted to 86.38 million in 2021 once morest 9.93 million operations in 2019, an increase of 770%. In 2020, withdrawals amounted to 58.43 million.

Electronic payment transactions amounted to 2.13 million in 2021, compared to 274 transactions in 2019 (+ 678%), while payments by automatic note devices (ATM) (proximity payment) reached 8.08 million operations in 2021 compared to 202 in 2019 (+ 3.893%).

Note that in the outlook, the company forecasts a number of payment transactions of 24 million in 2022 and 40 million in 2023, once morest 8.8 million transactions in 2021.
