Algeria calls for linking the “transitional governance of Gaza” to the establishment of the State of Palestine

Algeria – Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf called for including “transitional governance in the Gaza Strip” within a broader framework for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Attaf spoke at a press conference in Algiers, yesterday, Tuesday, in which he announced that his country would begin searching for mechanisms today, Wednesday, to enable the United Nations to follow up on the implementation of the Security Council resolution on Gaza, according to the official Algerian News Agency.

At the initiative of 10 Security Council countries (out of 15), including Algeria, the Council on Monday approved a draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan, “in a step towards a permanent and sustainable ceasefire.”

Regarding the future of governance in Gaza following the Israeli war, Ataf said: “There are many initiatives that have specialized and excelled in formulating frameworks for the transitional governance of Gaza. Some are serious and others are absurd.”

He continued: “As Algerians, we believe that these (governance initiatives) must be part of a broader framework for the establishment of a Palestinian state.”

Since October 7, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, leaving tens of thousands of civilian casualties, most of them children and women, massive destruction, a humanitarian disaster, and famine that has claimed the lives of children and the elderly, according to Palestinian and UN data.

Without details, Attaf revealed “the programming of a ministerial meeting for next April 17 in the Security Council, on the issue of the membership of the State of Palestine in the United Nations.”

Since 2012, Palestine has been present in the United Nations as a “non-member observer state,” and to obtain “full membership” a Security Council resolution must be issued, as the United States, Israel’s ally, has veto power.

Attaf stressed that “there is a development in the international community’s view towards the Palestinian issue and the file of recognition of the Palestinian state has become an open file within the European Union.”

139 countries, not including the United States, recognize the Palestinian state out of 193 member states of the United Nations.

Regarding the Security Council resolution, Attaf said that his country will focus on “implementing the resolution, achieving an immediate cessation of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, and securing the access of humanitarian aid (..) without any restrictions or conditions.”

He added that Algeria’s policy “works to intensify international pressure on the Israeli occupier, to force it to adhere to international legitimacy, and to strip it of immunity from impunity and accountability.”

Israel continues the war on Gaza, despite the issuance of a Security Council resolution, and despite its trial before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
