The scammers ask for personal information and “boob pictures”.

The Algarve Health Authority (ARS Algarve) has issued a warning regarding fraudulent phone calls linked to fake breast cancer screenings.

The health authority warns that women in the region are receiving calls from people claiming to be doctors from the ARS breast cancer screening program.

Callers ask “Personal and intimate” information as well as “photographs of their breasts”.

The ARS clarified that these phone calls did not go through the health services or the breast cancer screening program in the Algarve.

He also expressed concern that these “Fraudulent activity can undermine public confidence in legitimate testing conducted through Department of Health programs,” which aim to “promote the prevention and early detection of specific diseases”.

The health authority also indicates that it will report the case to the competent authorities.

The Algarve’s official breast cancer screening program has been in place since 2005. Women are referred for screenings by the ARS Algarve Breast Cancer Screening Unit, which handles the referral, management and program monitoring.

The screenings are carried out in partnership with the Algarve Oncology Association and the Algarve University Hospital Center (CHUA).

Women between 50 and 69 years old registered in the health centers of the region are contacted by mail by the unit to undergo free digital 3D mammography with tomosynthesis at the mobile health unit which visits all the municipalities.

Alternatively, users can book an appointment through the Selection Unit’s online service platform.

The ARS stresses that patients are only contacted by telephone to confirm their appointment or set one up, but no data or personal information is ever requested from users during these calls.

ARS screenings are announced on their site Internet or by posters, but never by personal contact, in particular by telephone, he adds.
