“I thought about quitting,” the French sports newspaper “L’Équipe” quoted the man from the Savoy Alps as saying.
“When I got to the hospital immediately after my fall, that was on my mind,” Pinturault said. He also thought that his injury could lead to further complications.
“Even today it’s not easy for me. I don’t know whether I can reach my best level again, whether I’ll be competitive,” said the Frenchman.
Pinturault will be 33 years old in March. In his successful career, he won the overall World Cup in the 2020/21 season, became world champion in combination in 2019 and 2023 and collected one silver and two bronze medals at the Olympic Games.
Pinturault on fall: “A shock”
A few days before his accident in Wengen, Pinturault and his wife Romane became parents of a daughter for the first time.
On this occasion he traveled home to be present at the birth, but shortly afterwards he trained for the World Cup in Switzerland.
“The week went well, I trained well and had a great first downhill with ninth place. The Super-G also went well at first,” explained Pinturault in “L’Équipe”. “Then on the last hump an accident happens to me that you would never want to see or experience.”
“But,” he continued, “it happened and it’s real. It’s a kind of shock, a hard return to reality after the birth of my daughter.” Now Pinturault wants to fight back again.
